Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act
- Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act
(2000)
A statute that sets out how political parties, elections and referendums are to be regulated in the United Kingdom. It implements recommendations made by the Neill Committee to clean up British politics. It created the Electoral Commission, an independent body which has responsibility to regulate those areas, and transfers to it the responsibilities already created in the Registration of Political Parties Act 1998. The Commission oversees controls of parties’ income and expenditure, will keep under review the law and practice in relation to elections and referendums, promotes public awareness of electoral systems, and will in due course take over responsibility for the review of parliamentary and local government boundaries.
